Week 3 - Critical Thinking and Reflection

During class we discussed the roles of RPNs and RNs, their similarities and differences. One of the main differences is an RN consultation is needed when a case is highly complex , unpredictable and high risk for negative outcomes. In a similar manner, the sepsis simulation showed the collaboration needed between Nurse Practitioners and RN's. In the V-sim, the RN was able to identify early signs of sepsis and reported to the NP about premature discharge orders. Although the NP's orders were justified for the symptoms at the time, when the patient status changed the NP was able to assist immediately with STAT orders. Therefore, it important to have a clear understanding of our own scope but also the scope of other healthcare roles for great patient outcomes.

During class meetings, there were a couple of students who mentioned that they have treated a patient with signs of sepsis just a few days after completing the virtual simulation on sepsis. I participated by sharing an incident on educating family about risk of sepsis. After completing the concept map, I gained a better understand of what laboratory values to assess; for example, ABG's and serum lactate. Although I struggled to find patient teaching aspects of sepsis, with the use of my 'References' I dug deeper to gain a thorough understanding. I believe I should have elaborated more on on the teaching interventions to demonstrated what I would done in a clinical setting.
